I started today writing a story — and then a song came into my head, and I decided to try to write that out instead. It’s not perfect, and I don’t know that it’s finished, and I can’t show you what it sounds like, but here are the words nevertheless.
I’ve been wand’rin’ up the mountain
I can’t find my way
I gotta reach the top before the day is done
If I can’t top the mountain
I will fall away
There’s nothin’ left for me, down among the flats
I tried
Walkin’ down the river
It lead me nowhere
Just took me down and down and further down the land
It was
Somethin’ I didn’t realize —
Water only flows down
Goin’ with the flow would never raise me up
I’ve been wand’rin’ up the mountain
I can’t find my way
I gotta reach the top before the day is done
If I can’t top the mountain
Who then will I be?
I’ll be the one who never saw what was to see
I tried
Walkin’ through the forest
It hid the sky from me
And everything not earth nor branch nor tree
It was
Beauty in its own way
It just wasn’t right for me
What’s the use of light if I can’t see?
I’ve been wand’rin’ up the mountain
I can’t find my way
I gotta reach the top before the day is done
If I can’t top the mountain
What’s the use of me?
I’d just be that guy who only got part-way
I’ll try
Climbin’ up the rockfalls
Leapin’ over gaps
I’ll try
Gettin’ where I can with what I have
Because
Once I top the mountain
I will finally see
I’ll finally be somewhere that I brought myself
I’ll finally be somewhere that I brought myself
I’ll finally be somewhere that I brought myself
